Berlin Wall Sites Near Oranienburger Chaussee Tunnels

Site of some of the earliest successful escape tunnels. On 24 January 1962, brothers Günter and Bruno Becker dug a tunnel from their basement at Nr. 13, enabling 28 people to escape to Frohnau in West Berlin — the event inspired Robert Siodmak's film "Tunnel 28." In May 1962, twelve senior citizens spent 16 days digging a 32-metre tunnel from a chicken coop nearby, through which 11 people aged 16 to 80 reached freedom. In March 1963, 11-year-old Detlef Aagaard, his parents, and ten others fled through a tunnel starting in their living room (13 people in total).
