Grenzturm Nieder Neuendorf

Watchtower   Uferpromenade, 16761 Hennigsdorf

One of the last surviving Berlin Wall watchtowers, the Grenzturm in Nieder Neuendorf stands on the banks of the Havel river, where the border between West Berlin and East Germany once ran.

Built in 1987 as a Führungsstelle (command post), this tower served as the command centre of Border Security Regiment 38 “Clara Zetkin”. From here, officers coordinated 18 regular watchtowers along the Havel river border, monitoring the death strip and the waterway below. Unlike standard observation towers, this was a multi-storey command facility with communications equipment and, notably, an arrest cell at ground level for anyone caught attempting to cross the border.

After the fall of the Wall, the tower was preserved as one of only a handful to survive demolition. A small museum was set up inside in 1999, and the exhibition was modernised in 2014 with a multimedia experience documenting the border regime and its impact on the Hennigsdorf region. The tower is managed by the Stadtarchiv Hennigsdorf and can be visited free of charge.

Located just outside Berlin’s city boundary in Hennigsdorf, Brandenburg, the tower is accessible via the Berlin Wall Trail (Berliner Mauerweg) and makes a worthwhile detour for anyone cycling or walking the western route.
