East Berlin’s busiest transport hub was simultaneously a ghost station. The U2 and U5 platforms served East Berliners normally, while the physically separate U8 platform was sealed off and patrolled by guards as Western trains passed through without stopping.
Alexanderplatz presented a uniquely unusual situation: the busiest transport hub in East Berlin had a sealed ghost station hidden beneath it. East Berliners used the U2 and U5 platforms daily for their normal commutes, entirely unaware, or forced to ignore, that just metres below their feet, Western trains passed through the sealed U8 platform under armed guard.
The physical separation of the U8 level from the upper platforms meant that the ghost station could exist in complete isolation. Armed guards patrolled the sealed platform, watching for any escape attempt. After reunification, the U8 platform was reopened and integrated into the station, finally reconnecting the lines that had been severed for 28 years.
