U-Bahnhof Weinmeisterstraße

Ghost Station   Weinmeisterstraße / Rosenthaler Straße, 10178 Berlin

A ghost station on the U8 line in the Scheunenviertel quarter. One of the last to reopen on 1 July 1990, it retains elements of Alfred Grenander’s original 1930 design. Today it sits in a busy shopping area near Hackescher Markt.

Weinmeisterstraße was one of the last ghost stations to reopen, not resuming service until 1 July 1990, more than seven months after the wall fell. Located in the historic Scheunenviertel quarter, the station had originally been designed by architect Alfred Grenander in 1930, and elements of his original design survive today.

During the wall years, the sealed platform was monitored by border guards who worked in near-total isolation underground. Today the station sits in one of Berlin’s busiest shopping areas near Hackescher Markt, and there is no visible trace of its decades of closure.
