U-Bahnhof Jannowitzbrücke

Ghost Station   Brückenstraße / Holzmarktstraße, 10179 Berlin

The first ghost station to reopen, on 11 November 1989, just two days after the Wall fell. A provisional border checkpoint was hastily set up on the U8 platform. Designed by Alfred Grenander, the station opened in 1928.

The speed of Jannowitzbrücke’s reopening, just two days after the wall fell, reflected both its strategic importance as a U8 stop and the overwhelming public demand to reconnect the divided transit network. A provisional border checkpoint was set up directly on the platform, with hastily arranged passport controls allowing East Berliners to exit at a station that had been sealed since 1961.

A provisional border checkpoint was set up directly on the U8 platform, with hastily arranged passport controls allowing East Berliners to exit at a station that had been sealed for 28 years. Designed by Alfred Grenander and opened in 1928, the station has been fully modernised but retains its original vaulted ceiling structure.
