After serving as a U6 ghost station from 1961 to 1990, this station operated normally for 30 years before being permanently closed on 4 December 2020 when the U5 extension opened. The new “Unter den Linden” interchange station 200 metres away replaced it. The platforms remain sealed underground.
The station’s double closure is unique in Berlin’s transit history. Its first sealing in 1961 was an act of political division; its second closure in 2020 was a practical decision, as the new U5 interchange station at “Unter den Linden” just 200 metres away made it redundant.
The closure made Französische Straße the only former ghost station to be shut down again, this time for reasons of urban planning rather than political division. The platforms remain sealed underground, and the station entrances have been removed from the street above. It is a reminder of its Cold War history.
