Named after the historic Oranienburger Tor gate that once stood here, this U6 ghost station is just one stop north of Friedrichstraße, the border crossing station. Western trains passed through the sealed platform without stopping. Today it serves Mitte’s cultural district near the Neue Synagoge.
The proximity to Friedrichstraße, the only station in East Berlin where Western passengers could leave the train, made Oranienburger Tor a particularly sensitive point in the ghost station network. Armed guards monitored the sealed platform with heightened vigilance, watching for any East Berliner who might attempt to access the tunnel and board a Western-bound train.
During the wall years, armed guards monitored the sealed platform while Western U6 trains passed through without stopping. The guards’ primary concern was preventing East Berliners from accessing the tunnel and boarding a Western train. Today the station serves Berlin’s Mitte cultural district, within walking distance of the Neue Synagoge and the galleries of Auguststraße.
