S-Bahnhof Oranienburger Straße

Ghost Station   Oranienburger Straße, 10117 Berlin

The first ghost station on the north-south S-Bahn tunnel to reopen, on 2 July 1990. During the Wall era it lay sealed underground while the neighbourhood above was a quiet, neglected part of East Berlin. Today the area is busy, with galleries, bars, and the Neue Synagoge nearby.

During the 28 years of division, the sealed station lay beneath a neighbourhood that had become a quiet, neglected corner of East Berlin. The area around Oranienburger Straße, once part of the vibrant Jewish quarter, fell into disrepair, with buildings standing empty and streets largely deserted. The contrast between the pre-war vitality, the Cold War neglect, and today’s bustling cultural scene makes this one of Berlin’s most dramatically transformed areas.

Today the area around Oranienburger Straße has been transformed into one of Berlin’s liveliest districts, with galleries, bars, restaurants, and the restored Neue Synagoge as its centrepiece. The station itself bears little trace of its years as a ghost station, fully integrated back into Berlin’s busy S-Bahn network.
