Founded in 1962 by human rights activist Rainer Hildebrandt, this museum documents the ingenuity and desperation of escape attempts from East Berlin. Exhibits include a homemade hot air balloon, a modified car with a hidden compartment, and a one-person submarine. Located directly at Checkpoint Charlie, it draws over 850,000 visitors per year.
Rainer Hildebrandt opened the museum in a small apartment directly overlooking the checkpoint, initially displaying just newspaper clippings and photographs. As more escape attempts were made, the collection grew to include extraordinary artefacts: a homemade hot air balloon used to fly over the wall, a modified BMW Isetta with a hidden compartment barely large enough for a person, a miniature submarine, and suitcases designed to smuggle people through border controls.

The museum also documents the broader history of the Berlin Wall and Cold War division, with sections on non-violent resistance movements worldwide. With over 850,000 visitors per year, it is one of Berlin’s most popular private museums. Its location directly at the former Checkpoint Charlie crossing gives it an immediacy that few other museums can match.
