Berlin Wall Sites Near Chausseestraße

A lesser-known border crossing at the intersection of Chausseestraße and Liesenstraße, used primarily for West Berlin residents visiting relatives in the East. On 8 April 1989, just seven months before the wall fell, shots were fired here during an escape attempt. It was one of the last shooting incidents at the Berlin Wall. Today the site is marked by the "Wiedervereinigung" (Reunification) memorial. Nearby, the former death strip became known as the Kaninchenfeld (Rabbit Field), as wild rabbits had colonised the empty space between the walls.
