U-Bahnhof Bernauer Straße

Ghost Station   Brunnenstraße / Bernauer Straße, 10115 Berlin

This U8 station sat directly beneath the Berlin Wall boundary on Bernauer Straße. Sealed from 1961, it reopened on 12 April 1990. The Berlin Wall Memorial stands directly above at street level.

Bernauer Straße was unique among the ghost stations because the wall ran directly above it at street level, making the underground platform a direct extension of the border zone. During the 28 years of closure, the station was patrolled by armed border guards while U8 trains passed through slowly without stopping.

The station reopened on 12 April 1990, five months after the wall fell. Today, the Berlin Wall Memorial directly above connects the surface story of the wall on Bernauer Straße to the underground reality of the divided transit system, making the relationship between the ghost station and the border fortifications clear for visitors.
