The Berlin Wall stretched for 155km (96 miles) around the entire perimeter of West Berlin.
This total included 43.1km of the Wall running through the centre of Berlin, dividing East and West. The remaining 112km enclosed the rest of West Berlin, separating it from the surrounding East German countryside.
The Wall was not a single continuous structure. Different sections used different barrier types depending on the terrain:
Behind the Wall, the border fortifications extended the defended zone to a depth of 30–150 metres, including patrol roads, watchtowers, dog runs, and the death strip. The total length of the border roads was 177km.
Today, a double row of cobblestones marks the Wall’s former path through central Berlin, and the 160km Berliner Mauerweg (Berlin Wall Trail) follows the entire route.
