Griebnitzsee Wall Remains

Wall Segment   Griebnitzsee, 14482 Potsdam

The Griebnitzsee Wall Remains are a protected monument on the shore of Griebnitzsee lake, marking a section of the border where the Wall met the water. The scenic lakeside setting belies the deadly purpose of the installations that once stood here.

Griebnitzsee formed part of the border between West Berlin (Zehlendorf) and the GDR (Potsdam). During the Cold War, the GDR expropriated properties along the southern shore to create a restricted border zone. Underwater barriers, including metal grates and wire obstacles, were installed to prevent escape attempts by swimming or diving.

A section of the border wall still stands along the shore and is protected as a historical monument. The contrast between the peaceful lakeside setting and the brutal infrastructure of division makes this one of the most atmospheric Wall sites in the Berlin-Potsdam area.

The area is accessible via the Berlin Wall Trail and is close to the Griebnitzsee S-Bahn station, which was itself a border crossing point for transit passengers.
