From 1953 to 1990, the Marienfelde Emergency Reception Centre processed over 1.35 million refugees fleeing East Germany and East Berlin. It was the first point of contact for those who had escaped the GDR, providing registration, screening, and temporary housing. Today the site houses the Erinnerungsstätte Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde, a museum and memorial documenting the history of flight and emigration from the GDR. The original reception buildings are preserved, and the permanent exhibition tells the stories of those who left everything behind.
