After defending Abel in a politically charged trial, Donovan is sent to Berlin to negotiate the exchange of Abel for downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers. The negotiations become more complex when an American economics student, Frederic Pryor, is arrested by the East Germans. Donovan must navigate the treacherous worlds of CIA handlers, Soviet agents, and East German officials to secure the release of both Americans.
The film is set during the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, and Donovan witnesses the Wall going up during his time in the divided city. The climactic prisoner exchange takes place on the Glienicke Bridge, the real-life “Bridge of Spies” connecting West Berlin to Potsdam. Checkpoint Charlie features as Donovan crosses between sectors during negotiations. While some Berlin scenes were filmed on location, much of the production took place at Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam and on sets in Brooklyn and Poland. The Glienicke Bridge scenes used the actual bridge, though period details were added digitally. Wroclaw, Poland doubled for 1960s East Berlin in several sequences.
The film won Mark Rylance the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rudolf Abel. It brought renewed attention to the Glienicke Bridge as a Cold War landmark and to the largely forgotten story of James Donovan’s remarkable negotiations. The screenplay, co-written by the Coen Brothers, was praised for balancing historical accuracy with dramatic tension.
